SAS inSchool wins Java award
"The idea behind the awards is simple—we want to recognize the 'best of the best' from among all the cool stuff going on in the world of Java technology," said James Gosling, CTO of Sun's Developer Products group. The interactive tools in the award-winning application focus on the procedural and investigative skills covered in Introductory Algebra. Students can practice simplifying, solving, and graphing in a web-based environment. The tools stress mathematical investigation and discovery. Students are able to practice problems, receive feedback, and view solutions; explore relationships between functions or data sets and their graphs; and submit quizzes for assessment. "In the Introductory Algebra lesson, cutting-edge Java technology enables us to dynamically present a topic that is difficult to convey through conventional methods," says SAS inSchool Director John Boling. "Our efforts are driven by the needs of teachers, and we are delighted to work with leading content providers and technologists to design the most effective and innovative digital teaching and learning resources available." The Introductory Algebra content is part of SAS inSchool's Curriculum Pathways® 2006, which is designed to enhance student achievement and teacher effectiveness in all the core disciplines—English, mathematics, social studies, science, in grades 8-14. Curriculum Pathways is now in use by schools across the country for a small access fee per student. Thanks to grants from Bank of America Charitable Investments, secondary schools across North Carolina and rural Florida have access to the technology. Funding from the Wellman Foundation has made Curriculum Pathways available to West Virginia high schools and Marshall University. For nearly 30 years, SAS has supported educational causes and recognized that corporate citizens have an opportunity to enhance the educational process. Through SAS inSchool software and its Education Practice, SAS remains dedicated to creating a culture of leadership, authenticity, and accountability in education by providing teachers, administrators, policy-makers, students, parents, and support staff with the best tools for aligning resources with evidence-based outcomes. The JavaOne conference, which runs through Thursday at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, is the premiere venue for Java technology companies and developers to showcase market-changing innovations. This year's conference celebrates the tenth birthday of Java technology.
