SAS inSchool at National Leadership Institute

WASHINGTON, DC (December 10)-In collaboration with the US Department of Education, the State Educational Technology Directors Association www.setda.org held a National Leadership Institute in Washington, DC, from December 8-10, 2002. The Institute had two purposes: to support state directors as they implement No Child Left Behind legislation and to shape national policy and action related to education technology.

The meeting was based on a modified version of the Authentic Task Approach (ATA). This professional development design allows participants to deepen their learning as they work to identify and solve education problems in real-life context. The ATA slogan is "Come with a problem. The modified version of ATA was created by Elsie L. Brumback, the former Director of Educational Technology for the NC Department of Public Instruction, who served as Educational Consultant and Coordinator of the Institute.

State directors identified their most pressing needs in implementing NCLB. Their top-five list was used as the foundation for NLI agenda:

  • Scientifically Based Research
  • Technology Literacy Assessment
  • Common Data Elements for Educational Technology Assessment
  • Effective Teaching with Technology Assessment
  • National Education Technology Plan

Attendees included 49 state directors of education technology and key staff members, 11 representatives from the US Department of Education (including John Bailey, director of the Office of Education Technology), and 29 research and evaluation experts-who served as resources to the five work groups. Staff members from the Regional Educational Technology Centers (R-TECs) facilitated the groups.

Two SAS inSchool staff members shared their expertise at this by-invitation-only event. Marjorie DeWert, Educator Learning & Support Services, served as a research and evaluation expert for the workgroup on Effective Teaching with Technology Assessment. Caroline McCullen, State and Local Partnerships, served as a recorder/facilitator for the work group on Scientifically Based Research.
